Announcements:
***All library books are due back to school on Mondays.  Learners will not be able to check out new books until the old books are returned.  Thank you!

***Please remember that the tardy bell rings at 7:40.  Learners must be IN THEIR CLASSROOM by 7:40.  In the mornings, it is best if you drop off your children in the gym before 7:30 so they can walk down with their class.  The gym doors open at 7:20. It helps us start the day with a positive start when we walk down together as a class.  THANKS!!


What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Next week's spelling rule:  Using "silent e" to make the long /a/ sound.
**The spelling rules each week will start to become increasingly more difficult.  Please remember to help your child at home each week. Thank you!!

In writing we are setting personal writing goals to help show our success in writing.  We are doing great with topic sentences, closing sentences and transition words in the middle to help move our writing along.

During reader's workshop are are building good habits by scooping up phrases instead of individual words, setting reading goals, and smoothing out our voices when reading.  Don't forget to use your reading strategies when you get stuck on a word!

Social Studies:  

We will be learning about Christopher Columbus.  We will be using Pebblego to for our research to help us learn about him.   We will write a poem about Christopher Columbus, also!!!!


Math:

Learners will apply basic fact strategies to add.  Learners will continue to compose and decompose numbers up to 10.

Math Take Home Activity:
Have your child explain how to use a doubles fact to solve the doubles plus one fact 4+5
Give them other doubles plus one fact to solve.

Science:

Learners will discover the way matter changes through heating and cooling. 

First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is thrilled to spotlight JoLeigh this week. JoLeigh's dream job would be to be a math teacher and a babysitter.  She loves math! Her favorite fact is 70 + 70!  In her free time, JoLeigh loves to have play dates.  She is very excited to be on the Coppell Cheer team this year.  You can find her cheering on the Coppell Youth football teams.  Go JoLeigh!  Go Cowboys! 1A loves JoLeigh!




1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Manvikk this week!  Manvikk's favorite thing to do when he is not at school is spend time with his dad.  They love going to the movies together!  Over the summer Manvikk and his family traveled to London.  He loved seeing the Queen's guards!! Manvikk is always so happy that his brother is in A hall with him this year!! 

1C:
1C is proud to spotlight Saarth this week!  Saarth loves eating mac & cheese and playing with his grandparents.  His favorite subjects in school are Math and Science and he loves the Magic Tree House series.  In his free time, he plays soccer.  We are so happy to have Saarth as part of our school family!


1D: 
1D is thrilled to spotlight Ethan this week!!  He's a great friend and has a growth mindset.  He enjoys watching football, and his favorite team is the Pittsburgh Steelers!! What??Yes!!  Ethan like to draw, play tennis and run!!  He's very fast!1D adores our Ethan!!

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Next Week's Spelling Rule: digraphs (bossy h). Don't forget to study your spelling words each week.

Each morning we do DOL to help us edit our writing. We are on the hunt for missing periods, capital letters, and incorrect spellings, etc. This helps us make the transfer to edit our writing when we have Writer's Workshop.


Don't forget to download the "Learning A to Z" app on your smart device. You will have to put your teacher's log in the first time you use the app (1atce, 1btce, 1ctce, 1dtce). After you do that, your child will log in with their username/password. This is a great app that has leveled books at just their correct level! If you are having trouble with the app, please let your teacher know.


Social Studies:  

We will be learning about the importance of voting.  We will be participating in a fun classroom election with Duck for President.


Math:

Learners will apply basic fact strategies to add.  Learners will use objects and pictorial models to solve word problems involving joining, and comparing sets within 10 and unknowns.  Example: 2 + 4 = ___
                                    3 + ____ = 7   
                                    8 = ____+ 3

Math Take Home Activity:
Write 10 = 10 + 0. Model the problem with pennies.  Ask your children to make 10 another way.  Take turns until you and your child model all the ways to make 10.

Science:

Learners will investigate the properties and behaviors of liquids.  

First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:

1A is so happy to spotlight Matthew this week.  He is an absolute joy to have in class and wants to be a teacher when he grows up.  Matthew plays soccer, lacrosse, and basketball.  His favorite subjects are math, reading and writing.  In his free time, he loves to hang with his big sister and do math problems.
 1A loves Matthew! 


1B:
1B loves Anagha!!  We are so happy to spotlight Anagha this week!  She is an amazing friend and learner and always gives her best.  Her favorite food to eat is spaghetti, just like her teacher!  She loves to play tag with her little brother and can't wait to go to India again to see her cousins and her Grandmother.  Anagha has been a great ambassador this week greeting each friend at the door when they arrive in our class.  We love you, Anagha! 

1C:
IC is so pleased to spotlight Jennifer! Jennifer's favorite food is spaghetti and she loves reading the Berenstain Bears!  She spends her free time playing cards and taking dance classes.  1C is always happy to see her bright smile!


1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight Hadley this week! She is a great friend! In her free time, she enjoys cheering, baking, and spending time with her family. She loves going on vacation to the beach in Seaside, Florida!! 1D adores Hadley!!

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Next Week's Spelling Rule: Short /e/ . Don't forget to study your spelling words each week.

In Reader's Workshop we are focusing on dropping bad habits and replacing them with good habits!!
1. Read, read, and then read some more
2. Do a sneak peak and then check it to see if you were correct
3. Use your reading strategies when you are stuck on a word.
4. Always do something at the end of the book - - don't just close it up!

Social Studies:

We will be learning about the leaders of our country, state, and city. We will learn who they are and about their responsibilities. 

Math:

Learners will compose the number 10 with two or more addends with and without objects.

Math Take Home Activity:
Roll a dice two times and add the numbers or give your child a number.    Have your child draw a quick picture or tell you how many ways  to show that number two ways.
For example,   12  = 1 ten 2 ones, or 12 ones

Science:

This week , learners will classify objects by the materials from which they are made.   Learners will also visit the school garden to classify solids by properties, such as larger and smaller, shape, color, and texture.  

First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is thrilled to spotlight Sweet Sehbin this week!  She is kind and a friend to all she meets! Her favorite subjects are math and reading.  When she grows up, Sehbin wants to be a dentist, artist and a paleontologist. Sehbin wants to do it all and I think she can!  In her free time, she loves to draw and play with her little brother!  1A loves you Sehbin!  



1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Sania this week!  Sania loves to read and play with her friends at recess.  She has an incredible imagination!! She always has a smile on her face and is kind to everyone she meets!  She also loves when her Grandma comes to visit her!  1B loves Sania!! 

1C:
This week, 1C is proud to spotlight Saahil! Saahil always shows the best manners and is complimentary to teachers and other learners! He can't decide what he loves more - reading Vs. books or Art class. He also loves pizza and talking with his friends.  Saahil's dream is to be a basketball player when he grows up. We loving having this clever boy in our class!
1D: 
1D is excited to be spotlighting Greer this week!!  He is moving to Flower Mound.  He's a great reader, writer, and problem solver.  He enjoys Friday nights with his family, because it is movie night with pizza and popcorn!! He loves playing soccer and baseball.  He's a great friend to all!!  We wish him the very best!!

Special Friend's Day

Please plan on joining us Friday, September 14th for a fun-filled day at Town Center! We have designated times throughout the day for "Special Friends" (family & family friends) to visit our learners' classrooms in order to see some of the great things they are learning and doing. Our campus book fair will also be open during this time. Click the link below to fill in the form.  First Grade will have their special friends day from 1:30 - 2:30.



In order to expedite the check-in process for our Special Friend's Day visitors, please fill in the form above  BY THURSDAY, SEPT. 13TH AT 10:00AM in order for us to quickly sign in the special friend and send them to meet up with your child.

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

We are working on remembering the different types of punctuation we can use when writing.  We are also practicing how our voice changes when we read sentences with different punctuation. In Reader's Workshop we are learning about building good reading habits and what that looks like when you read.

Next Week's Spelling Rule: Short /u/ . Don't forget to study your spelling words each week.

Social Studies:

We will continue to talk about communities and the roles that we can play in our community.  Our Friday mind missions help us design, create, and problem solve.  Our "bunny community" is really coming together.  We have made houses, advertisements for the community, and created community helpers for their town so the bunnies can be safe, healthy, and happy!   

Math:

This week in math we will continue to compose and decompose numbers. We will also be using symbols to show how we can compare numbers.  

Math Take Home Activity - 
Have your child show you how to write <,>, and = to compare two numbers. Ask him or her to use words to explain each comparison.

Science:

This week in science, we will discuss how shapes of objects can be changed.  We will continue to classify objects by their properties such as larger and smaller, heavier and lighter, shape, color, and texture.  

First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is  thrilled to spotlight Ethan this week.  Ethan's favorite subject is math.  In his free time, he loves for his parents to give him challenging math problems to solve.  He has a wonderful personality and I can't imagine 1A without this sweet, charming, handsome boy.  We love you Ethan!  

1B:
1A is proud to spotlight Grant this week! Grant's favorite thing to read and write about at school is trucks and cars.  When he is at home he loves to play with his hot wheels.  Grant is a friend to everyone at school and always gives his best!  1B loves Grant!!


1C:
1C is happy to spotlight Natalya this week! Natalya loves to do science experiments, especially ones involving friction.  In her free time, she enjoys reading graphic novels, watching TV, and Harry Potter! We love Natalya's spirit and curiosity in 1C!
1D: 
1D is excited to spotlight Hayden this week!!!  He has become quite the reader!!!  He enjoys reading Mega Man graphic novels.  When he's not reading, he likes to swim, ride his bike, and eat at Gino's Pizza and Pasta!  We love you sweet Hayden!
