January 28 - February 1

Calendar:


January 28 - January 31 - Bring a rock to school that is no bigger than your hand. 
January 28th - Spring Creek BBQ night 5:00 - 9:00.  ***A percentage of the total sales will go to TCE!  We hope to see everyone there!!
February 8th - Tentative date to visit the Coppell School Garden. 
February 15th - NO SCHOOL for children.  This is a workday for teachers.
February 18th - Weather Day (NO SCHOOL if we don't use a weather day)
February 19th - SIX FLAGS reading logs due (if you need a new one, please let your teacher know)


Miscellaneous:

**Please make sure to send a water bottle with your child each day.  The water fountains can contain lots of germs!! :-) 

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Spelling: Next week we will talk about compound words.  Spelling compound words can be challenging to learn so we will study these words for 2 WEEKS.  There will not be a test next Friday.  We will be take out compound spelling test on February 8th. Please don't wait until the last minute to study!!

Reading:  We will continue to work on "how to" read a non-fiction book.  We are learning about a book's Table of Contents, graphics, and vocabulary words. Reading non-fiction text is very different from reading fiction text.

Writing: We took our Middle of the Year Writing assessment this week.  Wow can these kids write!!!  We will continue to enhance our writing by adding adjectives, transition words, and conjunctions (and, because).

Social Studies:  

In Social Studies, we will continue studying famous Americans and the influence they have made in our communities, states, and country! We can learn from positive choices made by these historical figures!

Math: 

Learners will describe the relationships among the U.S. coins.  We will practice identifying different combination of coins that equal the same amount.

Math Take Home Activity: 
Give your child a group of coins.  Have your child count out two different ways to total the value of 25 cents, 50 cents, etc..

Science:
Learners will sort and compare rocks in different ways, using two or more physical properties.  Please make sure to have your child bring a rock to school to use in our science investigation.  The rock should be able to fit in the palm of your child's hand.  

First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is so happy to spotlight Rebeca this week.  She is a great friend to all!  Her smile on her sweet face brightens our room.  Rebeca loves to play with her little brother when she is not at school.  She also loves to play Prodigy.  Her favorite subject is math.  When she grows up, she wants to be an artist.  1A loves you Rebeca!  



1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Sydney this week!  Sydney always has a smile on her face and is a kind friend to everyone she meets!  She ALWAYS gives her very best at school and seeks out the best in everyone she meets.  She adores her older sister and loves to play Minecraft with her when they are together.  When Sydney grows up she wants to teach gymnastics!  We know she will be a great teacher!!
 1B loves Sydney!!! 

1C:
1C is very excited to spotlight Emi this week! He is a wonderful learner and a great listener. Emi loves playing at recess and running outside when he's home. He is a very athletic boy! Emi plays soccer and practices karate. He also enjoys playing with his two dogs. 1D adores Emi!



1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight Maxwell. He is a great reader and writer. He has a twin sister. He loves being with his friends. He enjoys reading chapter books, riding his bike, and playing basketball with his dad! 1D adores Maxwell!

**If your Six Flags Reading Log is completed you may turn it in at any point.  All logs are due February 19th.
**Don't forget to write your child's name in the label of their jacket.  The lost and found is getting full again. 

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Spelling:  We will learn different ways to make the long /o/ sound. 

Writing:  We will continue building our writing skills with our daily writing in our journals as well as continue to work on letter formation with our handwriting workbooks.  

Reading:  WE ARE AMAZING!!!  Mrs. McCullough and Mrs. Vincenzo are amazed every day at how far we have all come with our reading and comprehension skills.  Our Reader's Workshop bags are filled with fiction and non-fiction books that we read every day (independently and with a partner).  WE LOVE READING!!!  


Kids A-Z  (Raz Kids)  We had to update our app so things are a little different now.  The new app has so much more for us to read with.  You will need to input a new teacher's name for your class and go through that class as the other teacher name does not work anymore.  It might help to delete the app and then add the Kids A-Z app again so that the old class name disappears.   Here are the new class names:

1A:   msork0  (number not letter)

1D:   tceburks

***The passwords are still the same for each learner.

Social Studies:

We will continue to use our skip counting skills to determine the value of a collection of pennies, nickel, and dimes.

Math Take Home Activity: 
Have your child count a collection of coins.  Have your child tell you all the different ways to make a dollar.  ex. 4 quarters, 10 dimes, etc...

Science:
We will discuss that the natural world includes rocks, soil, and water that can be observed in cycles, pattern, and systems. 

First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is so excited to spotlight Rithvik.  He loves to play basketball and when he grows up he would like to be a professional basketball player. Rithvik is a hard worker and enjoys to read!  Rithvik is a friend to all and we are so happy he is part of the 1A family.  We love you Rithvik and so glad you are part of our class.  You rock! 



1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Binyak this week!   His favorite subjects at school are math and science.  He said he wants to be an Engineer when he grows up just like his grandpa!  We know you will be great Binayak!! When not at school he enjoys playing soccer with his mom and dad.  He also said that his favorite vacation was going to the beach at South Padre.  1B loves Binayak! 

1C:
1C is very excited to highlight Tulasi this week! She is a hard worker and always has a good attitude. Tulasi likes eating chocolate and practicing the piano at home. She also enjoys drawing at school. Tulasi has one older brother and she loves him very much! 1C appreciates our wonderful Tulasi! 



1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight Raman. He is a wonderful reader, writer, and friend. He enjoys watching and learning from Wild Kratts!! He likes playing with his friends. He also enjoys visiting the zoo! 1D adores our precious Raman.

It might not look like an exciting picture - - but January in first grade is AMAZING!!!  They really do grow up over the winter break.  We love their independence at this point in the year!!

The girls from the General Store are here!  Good behavior and effort pays off when you have lots of Texan Bucks to spend at the store!  We are also learning how to save to be able to buy the larger items.

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Writing:  We will continue building our writing skills with our daily writing in our journals as well as continue to work on letter formation with our handwriting workbooks.  

Reading:  We will continue to work on building good reading habits when using our reading strategies.  We love to read!!! 

Social Studies:  

In Social Studies, we will begin studying famous Americans and the influence they have made in our communities, states, and country! We can learn from positive choices made by these historical figures!

Math: 

We will use our skip counting to determine the value of  a collection of pennies, nickels, and/or dimes.
Math Take Home Activity: 
Have your child count groups of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies with a maximum total value of $1.00.  If your child is up for the challenge, have him or her count a mix group of coins.  :-) 

Science:

We will continue to review the seasons and record weather information.  


First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is so happy to spotlight this sweet learner!  Ansh brings so much happiness to our classroom.  He loves being with his friends!  He enjoys playing basketball at recess.  His favorite subject is math!  1A loves you Ansh!  You shine so bright in our class!  



1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Anna this week!  Anna has such a wonderful love for dogs.  Her family is a foster family to dogs waiting to be adopted.  She takes very good care of them until they can find a home.  Anna has a brother and sister who she loves very much.  She is a hard worker in 1B and loves to read. 
1B loves Anna!  

1C:
1C is very excited to spotlight Olivia! She is a great reader and writer, and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Olivia has a twin brother whom she loves. She enjoys playing with her friends and eating pizza. Olivia is a kind friend and 1C loves her!



1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight our new learner, Nirosha! She is a great reader and writer! This has been an exceptionally smooth transition! She's a good friend to all and is a perfect fit with 1D. We already adore Nirosha!
