**If you haven't updated your PTO profile (or never made one) this year, please go to www.tcepto.com and update your info.  This needs to be done every year.  PTO wants to make sure everyone is getting their information. 

**We can't wait to celebrate the season with our winter holiday party on December 20th (2:00 - 3:00).  Please look for an e-mail to come home soon from our amazing room moms!  We know they will need lots of help on this day!!

**Town Center First graders are collecting new, unwrapped toys for children in need.  We will be donating the toys to the Coppell Lions Club.  We will be collecting toys form now until December 19th. Please place new, unwrapped toys under the Christmas tree by the front office.  When you bring in your toy, please sign your name on an ornament and hang it on the tree.  Thank you so much for helping us!   

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Spelling:   different ways to make the long /a/ sound.

Parts of speech:  Adjectives

Reading:  We will continue studying fairy tales, fables, and folk tales.  Next week we will concentrate on folk tales

Writing:  We will continue to use varying transitional words when we write

Social Studies:  

We will be continuing our unit on "Traditions and Customs" for the next few weeks. Our Mind Mission activity will be reading the fable "Filbert Fork" and creating a tool to get a filbert out of the jar! They will imagine, plan, design, improve and share, AND work collaboratively!!

**Don't forget to be working on your traditions and customs projects at home.  They are due next week!! Please make it easy and simple.  Just something for your child to explain what one tradition/custom is in your family.  If you have any questions, please e-mail your social studies teacher. 

Math: 

Learners will continue to use pictorial models and objects to solve word problems involving joining, combining, separating, and comparing sets up to 20.

Math Take Home Activity: 
Write 11-7=? on a sheet of paper.  Ask your child to find the difference and then write an addition sentence he or she can use to check the subtraction.

Science: 

We will focus on patterns that occur on Earth.  We have discussed the day and night cycle.  We will also be learning about changes in the sky and seasons.
First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is thrilled to spotlight Chris!  He arrives to school each day with a  beautiful smile and wonderful hugs.  When Chris grows up, he wants to become an engineer just like his dad.  In his free time, he loves to play soccer with his dad.  Chris loves math and science!  I know Chris will be an awesome engineer!  Go Chris!  1A loves you!  


1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Oren!  Oren is a very sweet learner and is a friend to everyone he meets.  He comes to school with a smile each day and always does his very best!  When he grows up he wants to be a scientist!  His favorite subject at school is reading.  When he is at home he likes to play with his toys and his favorite toy is a toy boat.  1B loves Oren!!! 

1C:
1C is so excited to spotlight Mason this week! He is a wonderful friend. He likes to eat mac and cheese and play videos games. At school, his favorite subject is math and he loves playing at recess. Mason is very observant and cheerful. He is also excited about the arrival of his first little brother! 1C loves Mason!
1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight Insiah this week! She's a great friend! She's an excellent reader and writer. Insiah enjoys playing with her friends. She likes to play games with her family. She enjoys eating chicken nuggets and playing at the park.

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Spelling:   3 letter word families.

Parts of speech:  Noun review and introduce verbs

Reading:  We will begin a unit studying fairy tales, fables, and folk tales.  We will talk about the differences in the way that they are written.

Writing:  We will continue to use varying transitional words when we write

Social Studies:  

In Social Studies, we are thrilled to learn about your family's customs and traditions. In Mind Missions, we will read "The Milk Maid" and design a better way to carry the milk!

Math: 

Learners will use objects and pictorial models to solve word problems involving joining, separating, and comparing sets within 20.

Math Take Home Activity: 
Write 7, 9. 16, + , - and = on separate slips of paper. Have your child use the slips of paper to show related facts.  We call these related facts "Fact Family"

Science: 

Your child will be learning about heat energy.  He or she will be learning which objects release heat and how to be safe around hot objects.  Here are some fun activities to help your child learn more about heat:  
  • Take a short walk outside on a sunny day.  Stand with your child for a few minutes in the sun, and then for a few minutes in the shade.  Ask your child where he or she fells warmer and why.
  • Prepare a meal that involves using heat.  Have your child describe why things like potholders and lids are important.  Point out other kitchen safety rules, such as turning off the stove and letting hot food cool before eating. 
First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is proud to spotlight Dezman this week. When Dezman is not at school, he loves to play with his little brother and likes to build stuff with his dad.  When he grows up, Dez wants to work with computers just like his dad.  His favorite subject is math.  He is an awesome first grade learner.  1A loves Dezman!   


1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Braedon this week!  Braedon moved to Town Center this year and we are all so happy to have him here with us! When he grows up he wants to be a firefighter!  I love his giving spirit!  At school he loves to go to recess and learn about math.  His favorite food is chicken nuggets from McDonalds. He said the best part about school  is his friends.  Friends make school so much fun!  1B is thankful for you Bradon! 

1C:
1C is excited to spotlight Musa this week.  Musa is such a friendly guy and a hard worker!  He loves playing Roblox and pranking his brothers. His favorite food is peanut butter! At school Musa enjoys playing with his friends at recess and science! 1C is lucky to have such a great friend!

1D:
1D is thrilled about spotlighting Aarav this week. He's a great reader and writer. Aarav enjoys playing soccer, building with legos, and playing with his hot wheels. He's a great friend and 1D adores sweet Aarav!

**We are still missing several report cards.  If you haven't returned yours, please make sure to sign it and return it asap.  Thank you!

**Don't forget to study for our Friday spelling tests.  Any time your child "forgets" to bring home their spelling pretest on Monday, please e-mail your child's language arts teacher so she can send a new list home.

**Our librarian is doing a leaf activity with 1st grade on Monday, November 12th.  Please bring in some leaves to share with the class to help with this lesson. 

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

 Next week's spelling rule:  Using root words and making them plural.

We will begin our Parts of Speech unit next week by concentrating on nouns. 

In writing, we will explore other transition words and how to use them when we writing.  

Social Studies:  

We will be discussing Thanksgiving and the importance of being thankful. We will also be learning about Long Ago and Today. We will study the differences in games, clothing, transportation, and more!

Math: 

We will continue to apply basic fact strategies to add and subtract within 20.  We have been working on making a 10 to help with adding and also subtracting.

Math Take Home Activity: 
Please encourage your children to practice their math facts.
Have your child show you how to write <, >. and = to compare two numbers.  Ask him or her to use words to explain each comparison.

Science: 

Your child is learning about magnets and magnetism.  He or she is learning what types of objects are attracted to magnets, why magnets attract and repel, and how a magnet can move something without touching it.


First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is so excited to spotlight sweet Zara.  She is so kind to all and is a friend to everyone.  Zara wants to be a brain doctor and an artist when she grows up.  In her free time, she loves to play and do math problems.  1A loves this sweet friend of ours!  Go Zara!  You are amazing!  


1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Victor!! Victor is a friend to everyone and always has a smile on his face.  He brings so much joy to 1B.  When not at school, Victor likes to play video games and spend time with his family.  He said his family loves him so much!  When Victor grows up he wants to be a math teacher.  We know he will be a great teacher!  1B loves Victor!! 

1C:
1C is happy to spotlight Helena.  Helena loves to eat macaroni, grapes, and peach donuts.  She loves to go to her aunt's house to play.  At school, Helena likes to read princess books and play with her friends at recess.  1C is so lucky to have a sweet friend like Helena!

1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight Ben this week! He is a twin. He likes to play Minecraft. His favorite food is red and white pasta. He has a dog named Murphy! He enjoys playing soccer. He's such a sweet kid with the cutest voice!! He's a great friend. 1D adores sweet Ben!

***Please sign your child's report card and send it back to your teacher. 


***Don't forget to display your red name card in your windshield when picking up your child in the carpool lane............... especially on rainy day dismissal!! 

***If your child is absent, please send a note to the office when he/she returns (even if you have already sent an e-mail).  A note is required for all absences.  

***Don't forget to bring back your library books each week!  1A and 1B go to the library on Mondays.  1C and 1D go to the library on Tuesdays.  

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

 Next week's spelling rule:  Adding "ed" to the end of a word to make it past tense.  There are 3 different rules to follow in this pattern. 

We are continuing with non-fiction books during Reader's Workshop.  We are learning strategies to help us be fluent while retaining comprehension of our non-fiction books.  We enjoy sharing our non-fiction books with our reading partner.  There is so much to learn!

Social Studies:  

In Social Studies, we are going to compare and contrast the things of today and long ago. We are going to research and write about the importance of Veteran's Day.

Math: 

We will continue to apply basic fact strategies to add and subtract within 20, including making 10 and decomposing a number leading to a 10.
Math Take Home Activity: 
Please continue to practice math facts and counting backwards from 120 with your children at home.

Science: 

Learners will begin our unit on forces that cause objects to move.   

First Grade Spotlight: 

1A:
1A is thrilled to spotlight Austin.  He is pure JOY!  He arrives each day with a smile on his face and ready to share a hug.  He loves his friends and everyone loves Austin!  In his free time, Austin takes dance lessons.  Austin enjoys to dance and show off his tumbling skills.  We love you Austin!  You make our hearts happy! 


1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Izaan this week!  Izaan is one of the happiest people we know.  He always has a smile on his face and a hug for his teacher!  When he isn't at school he loves to build with legos and play baseball.  His favorite thing to do at school is read and he enjoys the story Jack and the Beanstalk.

1C:
1C is excited to spotlight Liam.  Liam is a super active guy! He plays hockey and does Taekwondo!  He loves reading Harry Potter and watching scary movies! Liam has 2 pets and his favorite food is pizza. 1C is so lucky to have such a great friend!

1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight Ajith! We love his kind heart. He works very hard! He is a rule follower. Ajith enjoys playing video games and playing with his brother. Ajith is progressing very much with his reading. We are very proud of him. 1D adores Ajith!
