Kindergarten - 2nd grade Author Visit

Author and former CISD Educator, Julie Wolf, will be visiting our TCE Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade classes on Monday, May 6!  We are looking forward to this special opportunity to have the author read aloud one of her books, show us how she became a published author, and share fun activities related to her stories.  Families are welcome to purchase their own copies of Julie Wolf's book from her website or Amazon. If you would like the author to autograph the book, please have your child bring the book to Mrs. Keene-Carlson (TCE Librarian) before the date of Ms. Wolf's visit so that she can prepare it for her to sign.







Baby Chicks

TCE STEM NIGHT

We hope to see you all at our annual TCE STEM NIGHT on Monday from 
5:30 - 7:00.  The Ross Perot museum will be hosting this event and will have hands on STEM activities for everyone!  This is free event for our families!  

Conferences:

Due to the calendar and end of year assessments lasting until the end of May, we will not be having official end of year parent teacher conferences this year.  However, if you have unanswered questions and would like a parent teacher conference to answer them, please let your teacher know. 
What Are We Learning?
Language Arts:

Reading:  We are busy assessing all of the learners for their end of year reading level and sight words.  We are so proud of their first grade accomplishments.

Writing: We are using our writing skills to create books for each learner.  We love writing about our friends. 

Social Studies:   We will continue our earth day unit discussing the importance of recycling. 

Math:  We will begin our study on the use of nonstandard units to measure the length of an object. 

Math Take Home Activity  
Give your child paper clips or other small objects that are the same length.  Have him or her use the paper clips to measure objects around the house. Science:  We will be discussing animals and their habitats.  We will explore where animals live, how they move and what they eat. 

Science: We will continue our study of life science by exploring how animals move, what they eat, and where they live. We are also excited for the hatching of our baby chicks - which should start on Monday.

What Are We Learning?
Language Arts:
     
Reading During independent reading we are continuing working on reading our lists of sight words, as well as our leveled fiction and non-fiction books.  We are working toward our end of year goal of Level 16.  If your child is above level then he/she will continuing growing their reading in their appropriate level. We are so proud of our first grade readers!!

Writing:  We will continue working on narrative, expository, and "once upon a time" stories.  Our journal check sheet continues to be:
1.  Correct punctuation and capitals
2.  Using transition words throughout the story
3.  Topic sentence
4.  Closing sentence
We will look for organization of writing, development of ideas, and use of language and conventions. 

Social Studies:  Next week we will talk about recycling and the effect that is has on our world.  How can one person or one school make a difference?  

Math:  Learners will identify examples and non-examples of halves and fourths.  Learners will be partitioning two-dimensional figures into two and four fair shares or equal parts and describe the part using words. 
Math Take Home ActivityHave your child draw a circle on a piece of paper.  Ask your child to draw a line so the circle shows 2 equal shares and 4 equal shares.  

Science:  
Learners will be learning about the parts of a plant and their purpose.

FIELD TRIP:

Thank you to all the volunteers who came with us on our field trip.  We had a wonderful time visiting ATT stadium!! We love field trips!

1.  when to add /es/ and /s/
2.  how to change the spelling of the root word when adding /ed/ to the end of a word
3.  /ch/ /sh/ /th/ /ph/

Science:  Animal life cycles and animal needs continue to be the focus in science this week.

FIELD TRIP:

Our field trip is almost here (April 11th).  The buses will be departing TCE at 9:00am.  Please make sure your child remembers the following:

1.  Wear comfortable walking shoes.  There will be LOTS of walking on this field trip.
2.  Wear your #FIRST shirt so that we can easily spot all of our TCE learners.
3.  Bring a sack lunch.  Everything MUST BE disposable.  Please do NOT send lunchboxes or ice packs as everything will be thrown away after we eat.  We will be eating in the stadium.

***Thank you to all of our volunteers!!! If you are volunteering for our field trip, please remember that you will not be able to ride the bus with us to ATT stadium.  You may meet us at the stadium or follow the buses.  The buses will be departing TCE at 9:00am.  Also, learners will not be able to drive to/from the stadium in your car.  All learners will take the bus with the teachers.  If you are following the buses, please meet us in the cafeteria car loop as parents will not be allowed in the building due to STAAR testing. 

What Are We Learning?
Language Arts:
     Spelling:  We will discuss words with the /oi/ and /oy/  sounds. This will be our last week for new spelling rules and spelling tests!!  We will spend the rest of the year reviewing the spelling rules we covered in first grade!  
     Reading We can't get our hands on enough books!  We will continue to read with our Reader's workshop bags as well as Learning A-Z in order to work on comprehension.
     Writing:  We are finishing up publishing our books with our digital storybook app.  When we finish, we will put them on Bulb so we can save them forever! 

Social Studies: We will continue learning mapping skills, parts of a map, and how to use a map for directions. "Where are we on the map?"

Math: We will identify three-dimensional solids, including spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms (including cubes), and triangular prisms, and describe their attributes using geometric language. 

Math Take Home Activity
Collect a few three-dimensional objects that are shaped like spheres, cones, cylinders and cubes.  Ask your child what two-dimensional shapes are on those objects. 

Science:  This week we will be observing the life cycles of animals.  We will learn about fish, frogs, and chickens.  We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our chicken eggs!
