Book Fair:

Volunteers needed for Book Fair! The Spring Book Fair is coming soon! We need parent/community volunteers* to help with Book Fair Preview (Feb 28, March 1 & 4) and run cash registers, tidy/restock shelves, and help customers find things during Book Fair (March 4 - 8).  We also need a couple of volunteers to help with Book Fair Set-up and Tear Down (Feb 27 & March 8). We appreciate community support to continue this exciting tradition and consumer/financial literacy learning experience for our students! Please sign-up for an available time slot at this link:

TCE's 2nd Annual Culture Night
We are excited to have our 2nd annual Culture Night at TCE.  Last year was such a great success with all the dishes you shared with our TCE community.  If you would like to share an appetizer, main dish or dessert on March 28th please sign up below. We will get back with you with more specific details as the event grows near. TCE will provide sample cups to share the dish you bring.  This event was successful because of all of our families' contributions. Thank you for making our school so great!

Miscellaneous:

***We are collecting soup cans for Metrocrest Services.  If you would like to donate, there is a first grade soup donation box at the end of the hallway!  This is a great way to teach our little ones about giving back to the community! 

***If you are volunteering for our field trip, please make sure that you do your background check asap.  You will not be able to attend unless that is completed at least 2 weeks in advance.  THANK YOU!!!! 

What Are We Learning?
Language Arts:
     Spelling:  "ow" digraph
     Reading:  We will continue to learn about Author's Purpose (Persuade, Inform, Entertain)
     Writing:  We will look for our "favorite no" when editing sentences.

Social Studies:  
We will continue our Economics Unit.  We have been reviewing wants and needs and will move into goods and services .  Our vocabulary words are the following:  needs, wants, goods, services, currency, career, spend, save, and choices.


Math:
Learners will be required to use higher order thinking skills and/or multiple steps to solve math problems this week .  We will continue to discuss how to interpret different information from a bar graph and also how we use tally marks to count on a T-chart.  
Math Take Home Activity:
Please encourage your child to look through newspapers and magazines for examples of graphs.  Talk about what information is shown in each graph you find.   Together with your child, make a T-chart showing how many time the two of you say the word "eat"during a meal.  Then have your child say the number.  
Science:
Due to the weather last  week, we were unable to go to the garden.  We are hoping to make a trip to the community garden this week and will compare the soil from TCE's garden to the community garden.  We will also begin discussing various  ways we can use rocks, soil, and water. 

First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is thrilled to spotlight Reed.  This cute, smart, funny learner loves to play with his dog in his free time.  Reed adopted his sweet dog from a shelter and they are best of friends.  When Reed grows up, he wants to be a firefighter.  He will make a wonderful firefighter.  1A adores Reed!  


1B:  Spotlights finished! 

1C:
1C is excited to spotlight sweet Srinesh. You can tell by his smile that Srinesh is a friend to all!  He loves playing Minecraft on his iPad.  His favorite food is pizza.  When he grows, Srinesh wants to be a police officer so he can arrest bad guys!  1C loves Srinesh!

TCE's 2nd Annual Culture Night

*** Our rooms moms did a wonderful job on the Valentine's Day party -- THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!!!! We are  glad so many parents could come out and celebrate with us!

What Are We Learning?
Language Arts:
     Spelling:  We will not have spelling next week.  We will review past spelling rules. 
     Reading:  We can't get enough of our new books in our Reader's Workshop bags!! We love to read!! 
     Writing:  We will continue to work on writing in the past tense. 

Social Studies:
We will continue our study on Famous Americans. We have put their information on a class timeline. Now, we will be making timelines of our lives. 

Math:
We will be concluding our money/time unit.  Learners will benefit from ongoing discussions at home regarding time and money.  We will  also discuss how to interpret information from a bar graph by comparing the lengths of the bars.  

Math Take Home Activity:
Have your child look through newspapers and magazines for examples of bar graphs. Talk about what information is shown in each graph you find.  

Science:
Learners will continue to investigate soil.  We are hoping to make a trip to the community garden sometime this week.  We will compare the soil from TCE's garden to the community garden.

First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is happy to spot light our lovely Leliani!   She wants to be a hair dresser when she grows up!  In her free time, she loves to style her dolls hair and  her mom's hair. She brings joy to our classroom!  1A loves you Leilani!  



1B:

1B is proud to spotlight Isabel!  Isabel just moved to Town Center and has already made so many friends in our class!  She is loved by everyone! We are so glad you are here Isabel!  1B loves you!!

1C:
1C is very excited to spotlight Evelyn this week! She always has a smile on her face and brightens our classroom. Evelyn loves to practice math problems and play games at school. She loves her sister! Evelyn also enjoys playing with toys at home. Evelyn is a wonderful part of our classroom and we are lucky to have her!

***Valentines Day is coming!!  Our room moms are hard at work getting our party ready for us.  Please look for a note to come home about valentine cards for classmates.  Also, we are in need of valentine themed stickers, cut outs, etc. We will be decorating valentine bags in school to keep our cards in.  If you can donate anything we can use to decorate our bags that would be FABULOUS!  Please send them to school as soon as you can.  THANK YOU!!!! 

***If you are finished with your valentine cards for the children in your class, you may bring them to school any day next week.  

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Spelling:  Adding suffixes to a root word

Reading/Writing:  We are so excited to announce that we have added HUNDREDS of leveled books to our browsing boxes!!  We can't wait to dive into all of the new books that were purchased for first grade! 

Social Studies:  

In Social Studies, we will continue studying famous Americans and the influence they have made in our communities, states, and country! We can learn from positive choices made by these historical figures!

In Mind Missions learned about Eleanor Roosevelt. She served in soup kitchens. We designed a ladle for serving soup. We also reflected on this lesson by looking at ways we care for others.

Math: 

Learners will continue to practice telling time to the hour and half hour using analog and digital clocks.

Math Take Home Activity: 
Say a time, such as half past 10:00.  Ask your child to describe where the hour and minute hand points at this time.

Science:
Learners will investigate soil to understand that soil is made from rock and mineral particles and organic matter.

First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is so excited to spotlight Adeline this week.  She has the biggest heart and it shows through her sweet personality and kind words.  Ada loves to play outside with her friends.  She enjoys taking care of animals and fosters baby kittens in her free time.  1A loves Adeline!  She makes our hearts happy!  .  



1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Hila.  Hila came to Town Center from Israel and we are so excited to have her in our class!  She has two brothers and loves to play with her dog.  1B loves Hila!!

1C:
1C is very excited to spotlight Pranav this week! He is a kind friend and a mature learner! He loves to write and play with his toys at home. Pranav also plays soccer and enjoys playing with his older brother. Pranav is awesome and 1C is proud of him!
1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight Nikita. She loves reading, writing, and playing with her friends. She is quite the dancer. She enjoys playing tag with her sister and learning to code! 1D adores sweet Nikita!

February 4th - Pajama Day!! Oops - January got away from us.  We will be having a pajama day for our Holiday January Coupon Present. Please make sure to bring/wear tennis shoes for PE and recess.  
February 8th - Tentative date to visit the Coppell School Garden.

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Spelling:  We will continue working on compound words.  Our spelling test over compound words will be on February 8th.

Reading/Writing:  We will continue practicing our reading and writing skills to challenge ourselves to increase our skills.

**We celebrated World Read Aloud today with special visitors to our classrooms to read us a book.  Ask your child who their special reading visitor was! 

Social Studies:  

In Social Studies, we will continue studying famous Americans and the influence they have made in our communities, states, and country! We can learn from positive choices made by these historical figures!

We will be adding reflections to our Famous American writings.

Math: 

We are some money counting pros in first grade!  This coming week we will be finishing up our unit on Money and moving to telling time.  Learners are expected to tell time to the hour and half hour on both analog and digital clocks.

Math Take Home Activity: 
Practice counting a collection of coins or practice telling time on a clock. Things to point out include: the different hands, how can you tell if you are close to a new hour, what happens to the hour hand as the minute hand moves around the clock.

Science:
We are learning about the properties of earth materials and how we can use these materials.  We will be exploring the what happens to rocks when they rub against each other and ways to separate rocks by size.  

As we explore these earth materials, we will be taking a quick trip over to the Coppell Community Garden to see how how soil, rocks, and water are used.  We have this trip tentatively scheduled for the 8th but it will be dependent upon the weather.

First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is happy to spotlight this cutie!  Jack is a friend to all!  He loves to play football, soccer and basketball.  In his free time, he enjoys to play sports, play with his dog and also play prodigy.  His favorite subject is math. Jack wants to be a scientist when he grows up!  I can't wait to see all the things he will discover as a scientist!  1A loves Jack!  


1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Rohan!  Rohan is a wonderful part of 1B.  He lights up any room that he is in and brightens our day each day he is here.  When not at school Rohan likes to play WII party with his siblings and watch Ninjago.  When he is at school he enjoys a good game of checkers with a friend.  Rohan dreams of being a firefighter when he is older.  His favorite vacation is a beach vacation in California to visit his grandma.  1B loves Rohan!!!

1C:
1C is very excited to spotlight Tanush! He is a sweet friend and always has a positive attitude. Tanush loves to write and practice his math problems. At home, he enjoys playing with his toys and older sister. Tanush also likes to play tennis and pet his dog, Pepsi. 1C adores Tanush and his wonderful friendship!



1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight Kate. She is an excellent reader and writer. She goes above and beyond to help others and enjoys it! She loves to play soccer and to be with her friends. 1D adores sweet Kate!
