Announcements:
***Please DO NOT send your child to school in a Halloween costume on October 31st. We will NOT be dressing up that day.  

***As the weather turns colder and the coats come out, please don't forget to put your child's name in the label of the coat.  Lost in found can get very full!!

***Please sign your child's report card and send it back to your teacher. 


***Don't forget to display your red name card in your windshield when picking up your child in the carpool lane............... especially on rainy day dismissal!! 

***If your child is absent, please send a note to the office when he/she returns (even if you have already sent an e-mail).  A note is required for all absences.  

***Don't forget to bring back your library books each week!  1A and 1B go to the library on Mondays.  1C and 1D go to the library on Tuesdays.  


The Town Center Elementary Library will host a Storybook Pumpkin Patch for any TCE students that would like to participate.  At home, students and/or families can decorate a pumpkin to look like one of their favorite children's book characters. Students may bring their decorated pumpkin to the TCE Library 7:30-8:00am on Monday or Tuesday morning, October 29-30, 2018.  The pumpkins will be on display for viewing Monday, October 29 - Thursday, November 1.  Pumpkins must be removed from the library by 3pm on Friday, November 2.  Visit this link for details and guidelines: https://tinyurl.com/TCEpumpkinpatch




What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

 Next week's spelling rule:  /e/ at the end of a word and double /ee/ make the long /e/ sound.  example:  "he" and "feet"

We are continuing with non-fiction books during Reader's Workshop.  We are learning strategies to help us be fluent while retaining comprehension of our non-fiction books.  It is definitely challenging but first grade is up to the challenge! 

Don't forget to download the Raz Kids App "Learning A to Z" so that your child can be reading leveled books at home!  There is also some great non-fiction literature in the app for you to practice with your child at home.

Social Studies:  

We will be learning about the different types of communities and writing about how we can help our community. 

Math: 

Learners will apply basic fact strategies to add and subtract within 20, including making 10 and decomposing a number leading to a 10.  
Math Take Home Activity: 
Write 12 = 12 + 0.  Model the problem with pennies.  Ask your child to make 12 another way.  Take turns until you and your child model all the ways to make 12.  Please encourage your child to study their math facts.  💓

Science: 

We will begin our unit on energy.  We will be discussing sounds and how sounds are an important part of our world.  They serve to warn us, inform us, and guide our actions to keep us safe.  We will listen to and identify a variety of sounds. 

First Grade Spotlight: 

1A:
1A is excited to spotlight Radi.  He is a wonderful new addition to our 1A family.   Radi has so much love to share!  When asked "What do you want to do when you grow up?" Radi replied, "I want to adopt a child from an adoption center."  He is so sweet!  Radi's favorite subject is science.  During his free time, he loves to play prodigy math. 1A loves you Radi!  


1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Ritesh!!  Ritesh is a leader in our class and loves to
help when someone needs it.  He is a great writer and loves to write about all of the amazing science facts that he knows.  In his spare time he likes to play with his friends at Kid Country.  He especially likes to hang on the monkey bars.  When he grows up he wants to be a meteorologist on TV.  1B loves Ritesh!  We can't wait to watch you on the news giving us the weather update!! 


1C:
1C is so excited to spotlight Bryn this week.  Bryn is an awesome helper and friend in the classroom.  At school, she loves to have iPad time and playing with friends.  At home, Bryn loves to watch Wild Krattz and play with her pets.  Bryn is also very athletic.  She plays softball and does gymnstics.  1C loves Bryn! 


1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight Woobin! He has a growth mindset. He loves to read and write and strives to always do his best! He enjoys doing art projects, writing in his diary, and playing with friends. He's always willing to help others. 1D adores sweet Woobin!

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

 Next week's spelling rule:  silent e and the long /u/ sound. 

In reader's workshop we will begin a unit study with non-fiction literature.  Non-fiction text can be more challenging to read with new vocabulary throughout the books.  We will concentrate on learning the new vocabulary and how to use other words in the sentence to figure out the challenging words. We will also concentrate on fluency and comprehension when reading non-fiction.

During writer's workshop we will continue to use our new check sheet to proofread our writing.  Our new check sheet includes the following:
*topic sentence
*capital letters
*punctuation
*transition words (first, next, finally)
*closing sentence

Social Studies:  

We will be learning about National Holidays. Each group will research a holiday and present their information to the class. The can "teach" the class through posters, songs, plays and etc! We are certain they will be very creative!

Math: 

Learners will use objects and pictorial models to solve word problems involving joining, separating, and comparing sets within 20.  


Math Take Home Activity: 
Please continue to practice math facts with your child at home.  Ask your child to show you how to use what he or she knows about doubles to help solve 6+5


Science: 

We will be wrapping up our unit on matter by discussing how properties of material change when they are heated or cooled.  


First Grade Spotlight: 

1A:
1A is thrilled to spotlight Hridik.  His favorite subjects are science and math.  Hridik wants to be a scientist or an engineer when he grows up.  I can not wait to see the fabulous things he will come up with.   In his free time, he loves to invent things and go on to reflex math and prodigy.   Hridik loves to travel and would love to visit Alaska in the summer.  Take us with you Hridik!  1A adores Hridik!  


1B:

1B is proud to spotlight Miles! When Miles is not at school he loves to play with his brothers.  He just became a big brother for the second time last month!  Congratulations Miles!  He also likes to play football, baseball, and basketball when he is at home.   His favorite subject at school is reading!  He is a leader in our class and has a smile every day he comes to school.  1B loves Miles!! 

1C:
1C is happy to spotlight Caleb this week! Caleb loves to do things outdoors and play with his Nerf guns.  His favorite food is sandwiches!   At school, Caleb's favorite activities are recess, science, and centers.  He is our classroom problem solver for all technology!  We love Caleb!

1D: 
1D is thrilled to spotlight Luke Thurgood this week. He's such a neat kid! He loves to learn, he's creative and quite the problem solver. He's a great reader and writer. He enjoys playing soccer, playing video games, and playing with his little brother, Peter. He likes to eat pizza, hot dogs, and cheeseburgers. His favorite place to go is Utah, because that is where his cousins live.

*** First Grade has open spots for the PTO Raffle from the Fall Family Picnic.  Pumpkin Painting Party and the Lunch Party with the first grade teachers still has open spot.   The Pumpkin Painting Party is $25.00 and will be on October 15th from 3:15 - 4:15.  The Lunch Party is also $25.00 and will be on October 22nd.  If you are interested in either of these, please let your teacher know asap.  You can send a check (payable to the TCE PTO) in the green folder with your child.  Thank you to PTO for this wonderful fundraiser!!!  All money is due by Monday morning, October 15th. 



What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

 Next week's spelling rule:  silent e and the long /o/ sound. 

We have been enjoying poetry each week by adding a poem to our poetry folders that we keep in our Reader's Workshop bag.  Our learners love to take out their poetry folders during workshop time to practice.

During Writer's Workshop, we are concentrating on adding detail to our writing.  We will also have a new editing check sheet that we will use to make sure that we are putting everything into our stories that we need to.  Our writing is really taking off!! 

Social Studies:  

We will continue our study on patriotic symbols. We will focus on the Flag and its meaning and the Liberty Bell. Our Mind Mission activity will be to design a noise making device.  

Math: 

Learners will apply addition and subtraction strategies to real world connections. 


Math Take Home Activity:
Please practice math facts with your child.  Reflex math or flash cards are good options.  

Science: 

In first grade,  learners may think that water and ice are two different things instead of understanding that they are two different forms of the same thing.  This week we will be have some hands on science investigations that will clarify this point.  


First Grade Spotlight: 

1A:
1A is so happy to spotlight Madeline.  She wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Madeline is excited about taking ballet lessons this year and performing as an angel in the Nutcracker this year.  What a perfect role for our sweet Madeline!  When Madeline is not at school or taking ballet lessons, she  loves to sleep. 1A loves you Madeline!  


1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Kaylynh this week!!!  Kaylynh shows incredible citizenship every day that she comes to school!  She loves to read and work at school.  Her favorite book is a chapter book called The Princess in Black.  When she isn't at school she loves to watch Fancy Nancy on TV and eat her favorite candy, Pop Rocks!  When asked what makes her happy she said, "colors".  Her favorite color is turquoise!  1B loves Kaylynh!!!!

1C:
1C is excited to spotlight Ella this week!  Ella has such a gentle heart with a passion for animals.  She loves to spend her free time loving on her puppy and 5 cats. Ella also enjoys math problems and watching YouTube. She is a friend to all and we love how Ella's smile brightens our day! 

1D:
1D is thrilled to spotlight Alex this week! He loves to draw and build with legos! His creations are very detailed. 1D enjoys listening to his thorough explanations when he shares his creations during Texan Town! He loves to read, run, and play with friends! 1D adores Alex!

What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Next week's spelling rule:  Using "silent e" to make the long /i/ sound.

During Reader's Workshop we will continue to use our reading strategies to build good reading habits individually and with a partner.  We will also be practicing reading through poetry in our poetry folders.  


During Writer's Workshop we will continue to use transition words to build a paragraph when writing.  We are getting very good with topic sentences and closing sentences!  We will also continue to use DOL to help us with editing when writing.  


Social Studies:  

We will be learning about patriotic symbols.  We will focus on the White House, Bald Eagle, American Flag, Statue of Liberty, and the Pledge of Allegiance next week. 

Math: Learners will be introduced to addition and subtraction strategies to solve problems.  Learners will use dominoes to create related facts to show the commutative property.  


Math Take Home Activity:
Have your child practice counting backwards from 120 to 1.  

Science: Learners will continue to discover the way matter changes through science investigations. 



First Grade Spotlight: 
1A:
1A is thrilled to spotlight Mason this week.  He loves sports and is currently playing flag football for the Cowboys.  He wants to be a professional basketball player when he grows up.  His favorite subject is math!  Mason is a great friend to all!  1A loves you Mason!  We think you are marvelous!  



1B:
1B is proud to spotlight Brayden this week!  Brayden is a great learner in 1B.  He is always the first to help a friend and give a compliment!  He is an amazing reader and loves school!  When he is at home he mostly likes to sleep.  His favorite food is an ice cream sandwich.  He plays baseball, hockey, and soccer!  1B loves Brayden!! 

1C:
1D is so excited to spotlight our new friend, Andrew!  Andrew has been such a wonderful addition to 1C and we immediately embraced him as part of our "school family." He loves playing with his cat, Winnie and playing sports.  Some of his favorites include steak, math, and all things Pokemon!  We love Andrew! 


1D: 
1D is thrilled to spotlight Austin! He's a great friend. He loves the LA Rams and the Dallas Cowboys! He enjoys Raz Kids and is quite the little reader. When he's not reading, he enjoys playing football with his dad. He loves to draw and eat tacos! 1D adores our sweet Austin!!!
