What Are We Learning?

Language Arts / Reading:

Next week's spelling rule:  silent e and the long /o/ sound.

We have been enjoying poetry each week by adding a poem to our poetry folders that we keep in our Reader's Workshop bag.  Our learners love to take out their poetry folders during workshop time to practice.

During Writer's Workshop, we are concentrating on adding detail to our writing.  We will also have a new editing check sheet that we will use to make sure that we are putting everything into our stories that we need to.  Our writing is really taking off!!

Social Studies:

We will continue our study on patriotic symbols. We will focus on the Flag and its meaning and the Liberty Bell. Our Mind Mission activity will be to design a noise making device.

Math:

Learners will apply addition and subtraction strategies to real world connections.

Math Take Home Activity:
Please practice math facts with your child.  Reflex math or flash cards are good options.

Science:

In first grade,  learners may think that water and ice are two different things instead of understanding that they are two different forms of the same thing.  This week we will be have some hands on science investigations that will clarify this point.
